European Union

Question. Was Neil Kinnock -  failed politician, twice rejected by the British electorate, Welsh wind bag, the only person from his family in a thousand generations (i.e. since the stone age) to attend University - the best man for the job of European Commissioner?

Following the sacking of the whole Commission he was appointed to stop the fraud, sleaze and corruption endemic in The EU.

His main contribution seems to have been to sack the whistle blower who pointed out failures in the accounting systems that left the multi million pound budgets open to fraud.

His whole family are now on the EU gravy train taking a combined income and expenses tally exceeding £500,000.

Auditors have refused to sign off  EU accounts for the last eleven years!

Now they are at it again with the refusal to hold a referendum on the proposed new  EU Treaty. A Constitution in everything but name.

Every opinion poll in recent months has shown a massive majority in favour. The Government however attempt to get away with calling it an amending Treaty, totally different to the old proposed constitution. In this they are completely alone.

Look at opinions from around Europe.

‘The substance of the constitution is preserved. That is a fact’.
         Angela Merkel, German Chancellor
‘We have not let a single substantial point of the Constitution Treaty go.
         Jose Zapatero, Spanish Prime Minister
‘90% of it is still there...these changes haven’t made any dramatic change to what was agreed in 1974’.
         Bertie Ahern, Irish Taoiseach
‘Only cosmetic changes have been made and the basic document remains the same’>
         Vaclav Klaus, Czech President
It’s essentially the same proposal as the old constitution.
         Margot Wallstrom, EU Commissioner
‘Britain is different. Of course there will be transfers of sovereignty. But would I be intelligent to draw the attention of the public opinion to this fact’.
Jean Claude Juncker, Prime Minister of Luxembourg
‘All the earlier proposals will be in the new text, but will be hidden and disguised in some way’.
Giscard d’Estaing, French architect of the constitution

Michael Connarty, Chairman of the Commons European Scrutiny Committee was damning of the Government’s intention to sign up to the treaty in Lisbon. ‘I do not believe anyone with with a bit of principle would sign up to them’ he said.

Three years ago Gordon Brown said ‘If we secure a treaty that is acceptable for Britain, then I believe we can also put it successfully to the British people ‘. If that doesn’t suggest via a referendum I don’t know what does!

The cost of being in Europe is quite staggering. The right-wing Bruges Group has attempted to conduct a cost-benefit analysis of membership by Britain. They conclude we have contributed £213 bn since we joined and forecast that by 2013 this will have risen to £300 bn. In addition Over regulation costs at least £26 bn a year and the Common Agricultural Policy at least £15.6 bn.

That equates roughly to £114,000 a minute or £1000 for every family. Of course the government disputes the figures. I know who I would rather believe.

Only three ‘decentralised agencies’ existed in 1990 (That’s quangos to you and me) in 2000 there were seven and 27 in 2006. They employed 417 in 1995 but by next year the figure will rise to 3,835. Their cost has spiralled from £50 million in 1995 to £425 million. All to create jobs for the boys in the ever expanding European bureaucracy.
